About Howat's Hives
Howat’s Hives started as a hobby over twenty-five years ago when John Howat was employed in the IT department of a major utility. The courses at Sparsholt College gave him an excellent grounding, and the hobby built up to twenty hives run in his spare time.
Twelve years ago, early retirement enabled John and Jen to buy a friend’s business, which means that Howat’s Hives now has over one hundred hives scattered around the South Hampshire area.
The ‘bee business’ consists of contracting hives of bees to farmers and orchards for pollination and making the most of the New Forest heather, borage fields and Hampshire’s flora. John finds that beekeeping is harder work than sitting in an office but much more satisfying. Jen finds that organising John is also harder work than sitting in an office, but there you go!
